Mountain Roots Mural Descriptions...
- Fall’s Glory depicts a mountain landscape of intense color and beauty. The images carved into the landscape are ancestors who brought great creative energy into settling the mountains of western North Carolina. The branches reaching out represent those who took a longer step and faced enormous challenges to survive and grow. The composition is strong, as color, shapes and strokes move at angles across the view.
- Crystal Winter has a horizontal, more grounded composition, complemented with a flow of images and shapes. The faces are a part of nature, representing those that lived close to the earth. The cool colors of winter are contrasted by the brilliant reds of the sunset, red cardinal and the carriage. The drifting character of the smoke from the chimney and the relaxed mountains bring a feeling of retreat and rest during the cold season.
- The Road Home speaks of the impact we all have on our world, how everyone one leaves behind a legacy. The idea is that life is on-going, filled with new growth, just like spring. Those that came before will always be with us, in our culture and in our genes. The composition is well balanced with many strokes of color reaching outward and upward. A well defined dark to light pattern holds the design together.
- Wash Day shouts summer and warm days. The sunflowers dance in the heat while the rising sun casts warm colors over the farming landscape. The Rhode Island Red chicken seems to have a 6th sense about the woman from years gone by washing cloths in a pot over a fire. Other images represent mother and daughter, a farmer and an aging couple, people worked hard and cared for the land. The composition puts vibrant hot colors next to cool colors, making it a complementary color experiment.
